چکیده

Because of its unique colony form Bacillus mycoides has been a favorite species for the study of dissociation and life cycles. The mutually confirmatory reports of Nyberg (1929), Lewis (1932) and den Dooren de Jong (1933) have shown that this species is characterized by marked colonial polymorphism and that the sequence of events in dissociation is readily followed in cultures. So far as we are aware no complete study has been made as to the effect of bacteriophage on dissociation in B. mycoides. Since marked effects have been reported for other species it seemed that a detailed study of dissociation of B. mycoides in the presence of a bacteriophage should afford results of interest and value. The strains of B. mycoides used in a previous investigation of this species, (Lewis (1932)) have been employed in the present study. The bacteriophage was isolated from domestic sewage by a slight modification of the method described by Keller (1931). Difficulty was encountered in obtaining a high-titer bacteriophage for the original type strains but not for variants. Although numerous feeding and filtration experiments were carried out, the titer was never more than about 10-i for the original while a titer of 10-8 was readily obtained for the variants. Secondary growth occurred in all broth cultures with age. Plaques which developed in nutrient 1 per cent agar were rather large and corresponded roughly with the titer obtained in nutrient broth. When spread on the surface of inoculated agar plates the variant strains showed complete clearing, in which some secondary growth could 195

The nutritional requirements for germination and outgrowth of spores and vegetative cell growth of some aerobic spore forming bacteria.

During the last 10 years the subject of bacterial spore germination has been intensively investigated. In most of these studies it has been found that bacterial spores are capable of germination under conditions which do not permit the germinated form to survive (Schmidt, 1955; Stedman, 1956). Hills (1949) pointed out that a distinction must be drawn between the requirements for germination and...

Rapid characterization of spores of Bacillus cereus group bacteria by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to characterize the spores of 14 microorganisms of the Bacillus cereus group. This group includes the four Bacillus species B. anthracis, B. cereus, B. mycoides, and B. thuringiensis. MALDI mass spectra obtained from whole bacterial spores showed many similarities between the species, except for B. myc...

Effect of Household Cooking Methods on the Viability of Bacillus Probiotics Supplemented in Cooked Sausage

Background and Objectives: The use of Bacillus probiotics is an interesting way for manufacturing healthier meat and meat products as functional foods and also a valuable solution for overcoming the constraints related to the stability of probiotic strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium during processing and storage of foods. This work is an attempt to investigate the influence of common ...

Role of Ni-resistant rhizobacteria in the growth and Ni-uptake of maize in a calcareous soil

ABSTRACT- A pot experiment was conducted to elucidate the effects of single and co-inoculation of maize plant with Bacillus mycoides and Micrococcus roseus, indigenous to HMs contaminated soils, on the plant growth and uptake of essential nutrients and Ni by maize in the soil polluted by 250 and 500 mg Ni kg-1. At each level of Ni contamination, shoot dry weight and nutrients uptake significant...

Laboratory Study of Microbial Insecticide Produced by the Bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis of Starch Factory Sewage for Biological Control of Larvae Culex pipiens

Background & Objective: Epidemic of dangerous diseases caused by Culex pipiens’ bites prompted us to focus on these groups of insects. Today, the most successful biological insecticides are produced by the bacteria of the genus Bacillus, which in the production phase of spores, makes crystalline endotoxin protein. This protein can be activated upon entering the insect’s intestine in alkali...
